On the weekend of the 15th and 16th of September, the ACT Rogaining Association is running a navigation and rogaining skills workshop. The workshop will run over two days and combine theoretical sessions with practical experience in terrain. The first day will be held at Sports House, 100 Maitland St, Hackett (North Canberra, 2007 Yellow Pages ref: Map 50 D5) and adjacent Mt Majura/Mt Ainslie Reserve. The night navigation session will be run in the Black Mt Reserve. The second day will take place at a bush location near Lake George. Champion rogainers Julie Quinn and David Baldwin will be amongst the instructors passing on skills, tips and tactics on topics such as following compass bearings, interpreting topographic features, calculating distance, route planning, what to carry and other useful information. With a number of instructors present, we expect that all levels of rogainers will improve their skills. The registration fee includes lunch and afternoon tea on both Saturday and Sunday.
ACTRA has placed a cap on numbers at the workshop to ensure all participants get good coaching. Depending on availability of coaches, this cap is likely to be about 55 people. ACTRA also has an interest in having local (ACT and surrounds) people attend so if there is a large demand for places preference may need to be given to participants in the following order: 1. Existing ACTRA members; 2. Participants living in the ACT and surrounds; 3. Participants living more distant from the ACT. Please enrol in the workshop regardless of where you live. You will be notified on 1 September if you are unsuccessful and a full refund provided. Preference within these categories will be by date of enrolment.
