Course Description

Cast your vote, then come to the Rob Roy nature reserve and see Canberra lit up on election night. The event is on the hills east of Lanyon and runs from 4pm till 11pm. You will have the bonus of a couple of hours of daylight before the moon shines brightly, and you'll be home before the PM gives the victory speech.
For those scared of the dark, you are welcome to do just the daylight portion. You'll miss the stars, but the sunset will be good.

Route planning assistance will be available for novices.

The area is a mix of open grasslands, native forest and some grazing country. There are a few fire-trails and some hills to keep you toasty warm. Elevation ranges from 670m to 1094m. Vote 1 Hartley Life Care - they will be providing their famous soups at the finish.

Course Description
Turn off the heater, pull on the woollies and enjoy a 4h event in the Mulligans Flat / Goorooyarroo Nature Parks in Gungahlin. The event provides a great opportunity for novice rogainers to gain skills during a shorter event but will challenge the fitness of more experienced rogainers. The area is a combination of open grasslands and eucalypt forest with some higher points offering great views of suburban Canberra. The course has been set using a 1:15,000 orienteering map.

If you are a newcomer to rogaining or have completed a few events and feel that you would like to improve your navigation/course setting skills with the help of someone more experienced, we are organising some mentors to accompany you for the duration of the event. Please indicate in the notes section of the entry form that your team would like to have a mentor and your level of experience so that we can make appropriate matches. The organiser will then contact you with further information. This is your chance to get one-on-one coaching and pick the brains of some very experienced campaigners.

Course Description
Billapaloola Forest, east of Tumut. Approximately 95 km from Canberra via Picadilly Circus. Bush camping will be available on the Saturday night.
The bush will be radiata pine forest with sections of eucalypt with the altitude approximately 800 m to 1000 m. The area contains a good network of forest tracks, although you will have to get off your bike to collect the controls.

Please think about how you will carry your map on your bike. A map board is ideal. At least have a map case with a strap for around your shoulder.

Course Description
This year's ACTRA Metrogaine is set to repeat the enjoyable combination of urban parkland, streets and nature park navigation of recent years. Course setters Jasmine Elson and Craig Mottershead are offering as much running and/or enjoyment (or both?) as you can handle in 5 hours. All for the bargain price of $20.
The hash house assembly is conveniently located and the course takes in South Canberra and Woden. Delicious catering.

For the first time - and for the Metrogaine only - ACTRA will welcome entries from individuals who are not members of teams. This means that you can run by yourself and be eligible for a placing in the Individual category; but can you match it with the established teams?

Individuals entering should choose open Women or Men as appropriate for your category. The entry system will give a message about needing a team, but this can be ignored.

My Take on the Wetrogaine

From the inside of the cosy time capsule which was our hash house in the Scouts Hall, my sentiments varied from envy for the hardy competitors out in the exciting elements to frustration that their enjoyment was being ruined as the rain got heavier and the temperatures kept falling.

I need not have worried. Most of those who stayed for the 5 hours came back in good spirits and in far better shape than their control cards. And the extra time taken to reconstruct the worst cards and decipher punch and pen marks enabled the returnees/ refugees to dry out and warm up. Was this the first rogaine at which the electric heater took the place of the wood fire?! The catering, from Canberra Outriggers, was first rate.

Interestingly, a very sizeable minority of the 70-odd teams were individuals who took advantage of ACTRA's trialling of an Individual category - just for Metrogaines. And the outright winner Jeremy Reading - did go solo. Another interesting feature of this year's Metrogaine was the high number of new faces and also older faces who hadn't rogained for many years. Several babies and infants also competed. This omens well for our sport's membership base.

Lots of people were complimentary of Jasmine's and Craig's course. It was challenging in its scope and route options, while site locations were both fair and historically and scenically interesting. Given the weather only a handful of competitors got more than half the points on offer, most preferring the northern and western parts of the map. Not many got further south than Southlands or onto the Isaacs Ridge in the south-east.
